The Mission Statement of Abundance of Life is to stimulate a positive catalyst in the minds, hearts, and souls of individuals, enabling them to experience a higher quality of life. Enhancing educational opportunities and providing an array of services, social and activity programs to the community.
About Us
Our Purpose
To provide residents and their families living at one of six mixed/low-income affordable apartment developments in the Dallas/ Fort Worth area with a variety of programs, services and activities that will enhance their quality of life. Adult residents can take advantage of financial planning courses, credit counseling, parenting assistance, nutritional and cooking classes, tax preparation, spiritual wellness, and job placement assistance. Our school aged residents may attend Life Enrichment and Academic Program (L.E.A.P.) which hosts a variety of programs and activities held in a safe and secure environment for children during the critical after school hours of 3pm to 6pm Monday through Friday. General school support focuses on homework assistance, mentoring, counseling, social behavioral management, educational games, recreation and bridging communication gaps between home and school. There are opportunities for children to interface with professionals, from organizations which could include entrepreneurs, corporate executives, law enforcement, and educators. We’re most proud of our Drop Everything And Read (D.E.A.R.) program initiatives which is designed to motivate and encourage children to read as well as develop appreciation for reading.
About OUR Founder
Melvin Traylor, President & CEO
Mr. Melvin Traylor’s career in public education spans over 50-years and has included roles as Teacher, Principal, and Central Office Administrator for the Dallas Independent School District. During his tenure in those roles, Melvin realized the importance for children to receive academic and educational support each day and especially during those critical after school hours and during summer months. In fact, this dire need was essential to the development, growth and learning of so many young individuals.
Upon retirement, Melvin started providing an afterschool program for children, and in 2014, he established and founded Abundance of Life a 501(c) 3, non-profit organization. This resulted in him developing and implementing the “Life Enrichment and Academic Program” (L.E.A.P.). The program provides critical tutoring, reading, mentoring as well as creative arts & crafts for children residing in affordable housing apartments each day after school and during the summer months.
With Mr. Traylor’s knowledge, background, and experience in the educational field, he knows the extent of support children need daily, beyond their regular classroom experiences. This is why he feels the Abundance of Life programs are so important.
Himself along with the Abundance of Life support team continue to see just how many children have improved not only their academic skills but have also improved their social skills because of the L.E.A.P. and the Abundance of Life afterschool programs.
